Why Snacks ARE a Food Group (A Scientific Analysis)

The USDA food pyramid has been revised many times. But through every revision, one critical food group has been conspicuously absent: Snacks. We’re here to correct that oversight.

The Case for Snacks

Snacks are consumed between meals. Meals are food. Therefore, snacks are food. This is called transitive logic and it is undefeated in a court of law (we think).

Nutritional Diversity

Consider the humble chip. It contains carbohydrates (energy), sodium (electrolytes — basically a sports drink), and fat (brain fuel). A bag of chips is essentially a multivitamin in crunchy form.

The Emotional Nutrition Argument

Mental health is health. Snacks improve mood. Improved mood leads to better decision-making. Therefore, eating an entire sleeve of Oreos at 11pm is an act of radical self-improvement. You’re welcome.

Our Recommendation

Aim for 4–6 snack servings per day, minimum. Pair with adequate rest. Avoid any activity that might burn off the snacks before they’ve had a chance to settle in properly.
